Booger Blues

our little riley b. had a rough week.

her left eye (not to be confused with lisa "left eye" lopez from the mega selling group TLC) has a blocked tear duct and eye boogers spring up without notice.

the doctor told us it was an eye cold that was very contagious and that her other eye would probably get it as well. she was prescribed some antibiotic juice to be squeezed into both her eyes, four times a day, for five days. This didn't do much but make her eye super greasy and put Riley in a wonderful mood. so the cold never moved from her left eye to the right one, so we were pretty sure it wasn't a cold. so we told the doctor that the eye juice wasn't working and that it might be something else. she said that because it didn't move to the other eye, she probably had a blocked tear duct.

she said babies tend to grow out of them after the first year(great, Riley will have giant eye boogers for 8 more months) and she showed us how to massage the tear duct to relieve the eye. she also said that there is a surgical procedure that can be done to unblock it. .

um...no thanks.

she seems happy enough and we'll just have to buy more q-tips.

Riley also started to get a cold at the beginning of last week, it started with her sinuses, a runny nose, some congestion. we got her some nose drops to break up the mucus (i know that everyone is riveted so far on Riley's totally groddy eye and nose boogers) so that it will flow down the back of her throat.

i thought i wanted to teach her to talk and pull mommy's hair, now all i want her to learn is how to blow her nose. we have that blue sucker thing that we use to suck out her nose. every hospital gives them to you when you have a baby. it becomes indispensable.

Riley hates it. so i have Skyla do it (i'm kidding, sort of).

what started out as a little congestion, progressed into a full blown cold. she started coughing and you could hear her little chest rattle and her little lungs weeze. i started to get worried. Skyla reassured me that she had no other signs of distress such as a fever or loss of appetite. Plus Riley had her 4 month check up on Friday and we could talk to the doctor then. i was reassured.

friday rolled around and i went off to work. Riley went with her mom to the doctors. the doctor suggested that we give her infant tylenol, keep her elevated at night (which we were doing), and get a humidifier. her doctor checked her ears and noticed that they were becoming blocked and that in the next few days she might develop an ear infection. yikes! could it get any worse.

then the doctor gave her four shots, two on each leg.

the doctor wrote a prescription for antibiotic just in case she developed the ear infection. i came home that evening after work and Skyla was pretty anxious for me to come home and help her with Riley. she had to go into work that night to do an experiment and wouldn't be home until 6 in the morning.

around 8 pm, Riley was being lethargic and eating very little. we took her temperature and it was 102 degrees. Sklya started to get worried. i read a little from the baby bible "what to expect in the first year" and told Skyla that it wasn't that bad of a fever. she was reassured (more from calling the doctor than listening to me, but i like to think i helped).

so Skyla went, begrudgingly, to work and Riley and i stayed up all night eating popcorn and laughing and laughing. actually it was more like we each took little naps together.

her temperature dropped and she finally went to sleep in her swing chair. the exciting "fever" night was over and we survived.

she still has a little crackling in her chest, and the cough is coming less frequently. she's a happy baby again.

in fact, last night, she pulled mommy's hair. i'm so in love.
